I cannot login after Windows 10 update, says "password is incorrect"

After update on my desktop PC, my login password stopped working. I've already reset my password for my Microsoft accounts but none of the new passwords work  either. Not a CAPS lock problem.

Opted to reinstall Windows, removed all apps while keeping my files...NO HELP.. Still have same login problem.

Hi Steve. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Had you not reset without asking first we would have had more options to offer.

If you cannot sign in Safe Mode following one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

then I would Create Windows 10 Installation Media on another PC to do the vastly superior Clean install, making sure during the install to delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest:. These steps compiles the best possible Clean Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money could buy: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Try restarting a few times then try again.

Try disconnecting from the Internet and try again.

If that does not work, reboot in Safe Mode then try signing in.

At the sign in screen:
Hold down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking the Power button on the screen.
Continue to hold down the shift key while clicking Restart.
Continue to hold down the shift key until the Advanced Recovery Options menu appears.
Click Troubleshoot
Click Advanced options
Click Startup Settings
Click Restart
Press (4) to Enable Safe Mode
Wait while Windows 10 starts in safe mode.

If you are still unable to log in, see the following:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Other things you can try - enable to built in Administrator account:

Hold down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking the Power button on the screen.
Continue to hold down the shift key while clicking Restart.
Continue to hold down the shift key until the Advanced Recovery Options menu appears.
Click Troubleshoot
Click Advanced options
Click Command Prompt

At the command prompt, type:
net user administrator /active:yes

Hit Enter

Close command prompt, restart, then try signing into the Administrator account.

If that does not work, your best course of action is to perform a custom install:

Go to a working computer, download, create a bootable copy, then perform a clean install.

Unable to log in after fresh start, and no power button on login screen. I also tried try to login after changing password using 'forgot password' option, still same error.  (Windows 10).

I found out that my system rebooted after a windows 10 update with the wrong keyboard (it went from qwerty to azerty) so when i typed my password it was refused. I used the virtual keyboard (found at the bottom right of the login screen) to type my password and it worked. Then changed the configuration of my keyboard from azerty to qwerty.

I have this exact problem. After a Windows 10 reset, can no longer log in.

The virtual keyboard does not resolve this.

Nor does using "forgot password".

Like Harpinder, my power icon is missing too - so I cannot force a restart into safe mode.

What's the solution please Microsoft?

Exactly the same here.  Every possible solution I can find relies on holding shift while pressing the onscreen power button - but I have no onscreen power button just a WiFi and Windows Ease of Access options.

Please can we get a solution, the computer is completely unusable without this and it's clearly a fault of Microsoft so we need a fix!

Under the Ease of Access options button on the lower right of the login screen, you should be able to choose to activate the virtual keyboard from which you can enter your password.
